A journey from darkness to light. Struggles between love and despair result in a pulse-raising masterpiece that stirs the soul. Gemma New is always a popular guest conductor here in Scotland, and she knows exactly how to get to the heart of a masterpiece – whether Lera Auerbach’s fiery retelling of the myth of Icarus, or the shadows, secrets and burning truths of Shostakovich’s powerful First Violin Concerto. Rosanne Philippens is the soloist today: a violinist who believes that every note should convey emotion, and forge a connection. Lang Lang, one of the worlds leading figures in modern classical music and star of Channel 4s The Piano, will take to the stage for two exceptional performances this autumn, as he masterfully recreates one of the greatest masterpieces of keyboard literature, Bachs The Goldberg Variations. Lang Lang The Goldberg Variations brings to life Lang Langs The Goldberg Variations album in a thrilling live environment. Ive been studying this work for more than 20 years, and recording it has been a lifelong dream, Ive never spent so much time on one piece, explains Lang Lang of The Goldberg Variations. Ive moved into new terrain with the Goldberg Variations and really immersed myself fully in this project. The Goldberg Variations is, in the words of musicologist John Gillespie, the crowning achievement of the Baroque keyboard. On one level it is simply a beautiful piece of keyboard music; on another, its construction and inventiveness make it resemble a musical Rubiks Cube. As a pianist, Lang Lang went on a long and inspirational process to feel the depth and beauty of this outstanding piece of musical craftmanship from Bach. The Goldberg Variations are exceptional: this is the most creative and, crucially, the most multidimensional work in the keyboard repertoire, says Lang Lang; and for two extraordinary evenings, Lang Lang will traverse his audiences through this mesmerising and breathtaking Bach journey. Lang Lang The Goldberg Variations is not to be missed.

Public Service Broadcasting

Public Service Broadcasting

6 Aug 2025 - 6 Aug 2025

Public Service Broadcasting have been “teaching the lessons of the past through the music of the future” for more than a decade now. 2013’s debut album Inform – Educate – Entertain used archival samples from the British Film Institute as audio-portals to the Battle of Britain, the summit of Everest and beyond. Two years later, The Race For Space used similar methods to laud the superpowers’ rivalry and heroism in orbit and on the moon. In 2017, joined by voices including Manic Street Preachers’ James Dean Bradfield, Every Valley was a moving exploration of community and memory via the rise and fall of the British coal industry. Pointedly topical in its analyses, it reached number four on the UK charts. For their fourth album, Bright Magic (2021), the band take inspiration from Berlin: “It’s become an album about moving to Berlin to write an album about people who move to Berlin to write an album…”. Heralded as the band’s most varied and cerebral record, Bright Magic is an impressionist portrait of the city from the ground up, less linear and narrative than previous works, combining PSB’s use of electronics and surging guitar rock with sound samples collected in the city itself to realise the dreams of Berlin they’d constructed in their minds.

Roger Daltrey

Roger Daltrey is one of the founding fathers of the British rock boom. As frontman of the legendary band The Who, Daltrey was at the forefront of the British Invasion, with bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, taking a very British take on American music back across the Atlantic Ocean to rave reviews. Singing songs composed by The Who's lead guitarist Pete Townshend, Daltrey's powerful delivery influenced many would be vocalists to take up the microphone themselves. With highlights such as My Generation's stop start, stuttering proclamations about dying before he gets old and the emotional release of the scream at the end of Won't Get Fooled Again, coupled with the trademark flowing locks and swinging microphones, Daltrey's work as a frontman was unparalleled by any of his contemporaries.

The Teskey Brothers

The Teskey Brothers

26 Jun 2025 - 10 Jul 2025

Sam and Josh Teskey discovered American soul music of the 1960's via their parents' record collection and were immediately taken. As teenagers, the two brothers jammed night after night in the bungalow behind their family home on the outskirts of Melbourne, devouring the R&B songbook and absorbing the tricks of the blues trade. In their obsession, the pair became accomplished players and soon began writing originals; a process which came naturally to both of them. In 2008, they were joined by Liam Gough (drums) and Brendon Love (bass) to form The Teskey Brothers. The group spent the next eight years cutting their teeth in city-fringe pubs and backyard party jams, honing the old-school Motown soul sound and working it into something of their own. Finally in 2017 The Teskey Brothers released their debut album Half Mile Harvest. The record, self-produced at their home studio in Warrandyte, captures the essence of old school soul that the four have grown to love and know over years of musical friendship. The songs are beautifully written, showcasing the musicianship at hand and dripping with warm melodious hooks as natural and alive as anything that came out of Stax-era Memphis. The rest of 2017 will see the band touring through Australia playing headline shows and festivals. They may have years under their belt but it feels like The Teskey Brothers are just getting started.

1 May 2025 - 23 May 2025

Inspired by the performances of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford, the UK stars are hitting the road (with Pasquale at the wheel of the tour bus). Packed with laughs and songs, backed by a 15-piece band, the show will let the audience in on the banter between some of television's best-loved stars - who are also very close friends. Bradley Walsh says: "People are starved of our type of entertainment - songs, stories, jokes - and banter! It's an homage to the Rat Pack but brought up to the modern day, and its a fantastic night. We are just thrilled. We all share the same dressing room - we're mates. We've known each other for so long now - and the show is about warmth and family - because we are. It's great, really great." Walsh was joined by his three mates and the Barry Robinson Big Band for a one-off show at the Palladium in London in March, and the idea was born for a full-on Prat Pack tour. Fans can expect an evening packed with jokes that can only come from the chemistry of such seasoned entertainers. Walsh, Conley and Richie were all Pontins Bluecoats earlier in their careers and Pasquale was a Warner's Greencoat, giving them all a grounding in variety before decades-long careers at the very top of entertainment.

Known for performances that convey deep emotion, Vega’s distinctive, “clear, unwavering voice” (Rolling Stone) has been described as “a cool, dry sandpaper-brushed near-whisper” by The Washington Post, with NPR Music noting that she “has been making vital, inventive music” throughout the course of her decades-long career.

NFM Leopoldinum: Bizet’s Carmen Suite
Experience the unforgettable music of Bizet’s opera Carmen alongside moving pieces by Bacewicz and Strauss. This programme spans deep emotion and playful ingenuity, performed by the distinguished NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra under the direction of virtuoso violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky. Grażyna Bacewicz’s Concerto for String Orchestra is a striking opener - its music shifting from fiercely propulsive to sublimely lyrical. A composer who deserves to be heard more often, Bacewicz brings a distinctive voice to 20th-century string repertoire. Richard Strauss’ Metamorphosen, composed amid the ruins of WWII, is steeped in grief and loss. In its long, intertwining lines, Strauss mourns a shattered world. Budapest Festival Orchestra return to the Festival with a programme that celebrates their Hungarian heritage and showcases the vibrancy of music written for dance. The Budapest Festival Orchestra and polymath founder-conductor Iván Fischer make a welcome return to Edinburgh after their popular 2023 performances. This programme celebrates their Hungarian heritage and pulses with the vibrant contrasts of dance - from the elegance of Baroque to the raw energy of modern ballet. Johann Sebastian Bach's Orchestral Suite No 4 is an irresistibly lively take on a standard courtly form. Fischer echoes that sense of experiment in his own 21st century Dance Suite for Violin and Orchestra, a Bach tribute that dances from bossa nova to ragtime, tango to boogie-woogie. In stark contrast to the thrilling work by Bach, Béla Bartók's dramatic music for the 'pantomime grotesque' ballet, The Miraculous Mandarin was banned for 'moral filth' on its premiere in 1926. Based on the Hungarian writer Melchior Lengyel's shocking 1916 short story, the score lived on in an orchestral suite, shorn of its most controversial sections.
