Since The Divine Comedy’s inception in 1989, Neil Hannon has time and again proved to be one of the UK’s best and most original songwriters. 2016's Foreverland exemplifies this, with references to everything from Catherine The Great to the French Foreign Legion. Neil says of the new record, ‘it’s about meeting your soul mate and living happily ever after… and then what comes after happily ever after. Get ready for the most historically inaccurate hit of the summer’. While not releasing a record since 2010’s Bang Goes The Knighthood, Neil Hannon has certainly kept himself busy. He co-wrote a second album for acclaimed cricket-themed project, The Duckworth Lewis Method, composed a choral work for the Royal Festival Hall’s newly renovated organ entitled ‘To Our Fathers In Distress’, and oversaw the transfer of his musical, Swallows And Amazons, to the West End stage.

This Shining Night

This Shining Night

13 Aug 2026 - 13 Aug 2026

The Edinburgh Festival Chorus joins with our Rising Stars for a programme of American music from the 20th and 21st centuries. The versatile Edinburgh Festival Chorus, under the baton of Sofi Jeannin, joins forces with an ensemble of our Rising Stars for a programme celebrating the rich diversity of American choral music. Evocative hymns and love songs by Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland stand alongside powerful takes on contemporary political concerns, such as Gabriela Lena Frank’s ‘¡Chicanofóbia!’, a movement from her Jalapeño Blues. At the centre of the programme is Joel Thompson’s heartbreaking Seven Last Words of the Unarmed, settings of the final words of seven unarmed Black men before they were killed. Reena Esmail’s When the Violin offers a wordless response of sorrow. The rest of the programme is a wonderfully varied choral journey across the USA in the company of some outstanding contemporary composers, including Nico Muhly, Caroline Shaw and Jeffery Ames. Relax in a beanbag for a fully immersive experience. Sung in English and Latin with English surtitles
Coleridge-Taylor’s The Song of Hiawatha
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s choral masterpiece is performed for the first time at the Festival, with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and conductor Rafael Payare. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's monumental cantata trilogy, The Song of Hiawatha (1899), became a sensation in the early 20th century, regularly selling out the Royal Albert Hall. Inspired by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem about an Ojibwe warrior, the now rarely performed piece is one of Coleridge-Taylor's greatest achievements. With colourful orchestration and imaginative choral writing, the work explores themes of celebration (Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast), mourning (The Death of Minnehaha) and transcendence (Hiawatha’s Departure). Among the memorable solo numbers are the tenor’s romantic ‘Onaway! Awake, beloved!’ and the baritone’s impassioned ‘Farewell, said he, Minnehaha’. Join the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, conductor Rafael Payare, a trio of star soloists including Scottish tenor Nicky Spence, and the Edinburgh Festival Chorus for the first Festival performance of this choral masterpiece. We have invited Uchenna Ngwe, a specialist in Black British classical music, to introduce its fascinating history. The orchestra’s second concert, Voices of Canada, features Canadian Indigenous voices and contemporary compositions - their two concerts truly in conversation with each other. Supported by The Québec Government Office in London Sung in English with surtitles
Voices of Canada

Voices of Canada

20 Aug 2026 - 20 Aug 2026

Discover new vocal works paying tribute to Canada’s Indigenous peoples, alongside works from composers Gabriela Ortiz and Richard Strauss. The second concert of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM) opens with two new vocal works paying tribute to Canada’s Indigenous peoples. Indigenous Canadian sopranos Emma Pennell and Elisabeth St-Gelais join the orchestra for two powerful OSM commissions that pay tribute to Canada’s Indigenous communities. Next up is Gabriela Ortiz’s cello concerto Dzonot, an evocation of the subterranean rivers, caves and stunning wildlife of Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula. Ortiz has described the piece as a ‘form of protest’, responding to our neglect of these valuable ecosystems. Ortiz, also featured in the LA Phil’s programme, wrote the piece for cello soloist Alisa Weilerstein, who plays with ‘directness and insight... technical prowess and depth of feeling’ (The Guardian). She portrays, among other things, a jaguar and the iridescent Toh bird, part of the ecosystem that Ortiz’s work calls on us to preserve. Finally, we move to Germany in the 1890s and Richard Strauss’s sumptuous tone poem Ein Heldenleben. With a stirring battle episode, ardent love music and playful quotations from the composer’s earlier works, it is a musical self-portrait both mischievous and deeply moving. Supported by Léan Scully Endowed Fund with additional support from The Québec Government Office in London
Berliner Philharmoniker: Elgar & Tchaikovsky
The Berliner Philharmoniker and Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko open the Usher Hall series with Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony and Elgar’s ‘Enigma Variations’. The Berliner Philharmoniker, described as ‘the greatest orchestra in the world’ by the LA Times, returns to the Festival after 20 years for a two-concert residency. In this first concert, the orchestra and their Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko take on two greats of the orchestral repertoire. Edward Elgar’s much-loved 'Enigma Variations', born of an evening spent improvising at the piano, brought the composer instant success. Each of the 14 variations on an ‘enigma’ theme is an inventive character piece, cryptically alluding to one of his friends. Although, as Elgar intended, the overarching enigma has never been solved. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, written in Italy, marked a turning point in his career and the emergence of his mature musical voice. From its dark and thrilling brass opening to its exhilarating pizzicato third movement and blazing finale, the symphony spins around the theme of ‘Fate’. Supported by Goethe-Institut Glasgow
Gershwin & Bartók

Gershwin & Bartók

10 Aug 2026 - 10 Aug 2026

Join 'some of the best young orchestral players in America' (The New York Times), in the second year of our collaboration with Carnegie Hall. The exceptional National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America performs three vibrant 20th-century masterpieces. These talented young musicians are joined by Festival regular, American conductor Karina Canellakis, praised by Gramophone for her ‘finesse and fire’. Samuel Barber’s effervescent Overture to The School for Scandal is followed by George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto, which brings the energetic rhythms of jazz dances and the soulful sound of American blues into the classical arena. Virtuoso pianist Kirill Gerstein, described by Tagesspiel as ‘a real phenomenon’, joins as the soloist. The concert closes with Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra - his final, and most popular, orchestral work. The Concerto sprung from a period of darkness in Bartók’s life, while he was living in exile in the US and suffering from illness and poverty. Yet, when the conductor Serge Koussevistzky visited him in hospital to commission this piece, Bartók went on to write this alternately nostalgic, witty and joyful tribute to his native Hungary, which is now a hallmark of classical music repertoire. Supported by Dunard Fund
Berliner Philharmoniker: Closing Concert
Experience ‘the world’s greatest orchestra’ (LA Times) performing with award-winning soloist Augustin Hadelich in the closing concert of their residency. The Berliner Philharmoniker makes a long-awaited return to the Festival in this two-concert residency under Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko. Renowned for their tone quality 'which hits you like a shot of adrenaline' (The Guardian) and their remarkable cohesion, the Berliner Philharmoniker’s players 'create uncannily evocative atmospheres' (The New York Times) in their show-stopping concerts. Ludwig van Beethoven's only violin concerto is a masterclass in intertwined symphonic and soloist sound. Yet, its 1806 premiere was not an instant hit, most likely due to the violinist sight-reading. Now, Grammy award-winning soloist Augustin Hadelich joins the orchestra to give this remarkable work its due. Next, another radical musical departure: Alexander Scriabin’s Third Symphony, ‘Le poème divin’. This ‘divine poem’ was Scriabin’s first step towards a unique modernist musical language, born from his personal philosophy of cosmic mysticism. Under Petrenko’s ‘peerless direction’, the orchestra showcases ‘a wonderful feeling of unanimity between conductor and orchestra’ (The Times). In this highly anticipated concert, the Usher Hall will resonate with the sounds of this incredible orchestra for the first time in 20 years. Supported by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Edinburgh
Mozart’s Don Giovanni

Mozart’s Don Giovanni

16 Aug 2026 - 16 Aug 2026

Part of the Anderson opera series Experience Mozart’s great opera of seduction, trickery and retribution. Don Giovanni is notorious throughout Europe for his insatiable appetite for women. But his luck is running out. Mozart’s magnificent opera - one of several collaborations with the writer Lorenzo da Ponte - covers one whirlwind day, as Giovanni commits murder, flees a determined ex-lover and faces a supernatural visitor. The alternately witty and profound score is one of Mozart’s finest. Its highlights include heartfelt solos for the wronged female characters, knockabout scenes for Giovanni and his hapless servant Leporello, and the arrival of the ghostly Commendatore - one of the greatest moments in all opera. Maxim Emelyanychev conducts the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Chorus and a brilliant cast in the fourth of their acclaimed series of Mozart operas in concert at the Festival. The Anderson Opera Series, made possible by James and Morag Anderson, allows the Festival to bring internationally acclaimed opera to Edinburgh and ensures these unmissable performances remain accessible to the widest possible audience. Colin Currie Group plays Steve Reich

28 Aug 2026 - 28 Aug 2026

The experts in Steve Reich’s minimalist music celebrate more than half a century of his work. Pioneer of minimalism, Steve Reich is a living legend in contemporary classical music. Colin Currie - ‘the world’s finest and most daring percussionist’ (Spectator) formed his hand-picked ensemble expressly to explore Reich’s music. Currie returns to the Festival after his thrilling 2025 concert with the King’s Singers, to celebrate more than half of a century of Reich’s work. The diverse programme ranges from the iconic Clapping Music (1972), based on traditional West African rhythmic patterns, to the larger-scale Radio Rewrite (2012), inspired by two songs by Radiohead. Other treats include the vibrant Quartet (2014), written for the Colin Currie Group, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Double Sextet (2007). The ensemble’s performances have been described as ‘technically impeccable and musically overwhelming’ (The Guardian) and ‘the musical equivalent of a high-wire act’ (The Telegraph). It‘s no wonder that Reich has chosen them to perform the world premiere of Festival co-commission In All Your Ways.
Jordi Savall: A Sea of Music

Jordi Savall: A Sea of Music

25 Aug 2026 - 25 Aug 2026

Journey through music from Europe, Africa and the Americas, from the Baroque period and beyond. Jordi Savall has dedicated decades to the rediscovery and appreciation of early music, and his many accolades now include the 2026 Ernst von Siemens Music Prize (often called the Nobel Prize of Music), recognising a lifetime of outstanding contributions. He returns to the Festival after previous performances with his versatile Hespèrion XXI ensemble. Hespèrion XXI is known for pioneering interpretations of repertoire from the medieval to the Baroque periods. They join Jordi Savall’s Catalan singers, La Capella Reial de Catalunya, and Mexican trio, Tembembe Ensamble Continuo, to connect musical languages and influences across Europe, Africa and the Americas. The ‘sea of music’ honours the millions of victims of the global slave trade and speaks to the cultural legacy of migration and diaspora that shapes our world today. The programme explores Mexican and Spanish repertoire from the Baroque period and expands outwards to embrace music from the 15th to 19th centuries.
Víkingur Ólafsson plays Bach & Beethoven
Grammy Award-winning pianist Víkingur Ólafsson performs Bach keyboard pieces and Beethoven sonatas. Grammy Award-winning pianist Víkingur Ólafsson has described Johann Sebastian Bach as ‘the musical love of my life’. His dedication to the composer’s works led him to embark on an epic tour in 2023, performing Bach’s Goldberg Variations almost 100 times. Now, he intersperses a selection of Johann Sebastian Bach’s keyboard compositions with music by Bach's admirer Ludwig van Beethoven. The Bach works he’s chosen include the expansive Partita BWV 830, inspired by French and Italian dances. Beethoven is represented by two of his late, great sonatas. Opus 90 is alternately fiery and reflective, while Opus 109 features one of Beethoven’s greatest finales: six variations on an exquisite song-like theme. Ólafsson’s recording of this sonata was recently described by The Guardian as ‘one of the most purely beautiful accounts on record’. Supported by Scobie Dickinson Ward
Alisa Weilerstein plays the Cello Suites
Alisa Weilerstein performs the feat of playing all six of JS Bach’s dance-inspired Cello Suites. American cellist Alisa Weilerstein describes a complete performance of the suites as ‘a kind of shared spiritual experience... they go straight to the head and the heart’ (Gramophone). Her 2020 Cello Suites recording was praised by The Guardian for its ‘sunlit clarity’. Johann Sebastian Bach composed his six Cello Suites during an especially happy period of his career. After his death they faded into obscurity - until their rediscovery in the 1900s by the virtuoso cellist Pablo Casals. They are now considered among the greatest works for the instrument. All six draw on Baroque dance forms, including the courtly Allemande, the lively Courante, the stately Sarabande and the spirited Gigue. But each suite has its own distinct character. Together, they encompass optimism, sorrow and transcendent jubilation. Supported by Scobie Dickinson Ward
Opening Concert: All Rise

Opening Concert: All Rise

8 Aug 2026 - 8 Aug 2026

Start your Festival with this resplendent jazz symphony embodying the human condition from Jazz at Lincoln Center and its Musical Director, Wynton Marsalis. Wynton Marsalis’s magnificent work, All Rise, is the inspiration behind this year’s Festival theme. This massive jazz symphony in 12 movements, a tribute to the 12-bar blues, blends musical influences from around the world in a full-blooded expression of the human condition. It traces a journey from birth, play and self-discovery, through pain and sacrifice, to maturity and joy. Teeming with the multiplicity, contradiction and surprise which life brings us, the music swings from juba to blues, via a New Orleans funeral and the rhythms of a train, to classical and jazz, in an exhilarating conversation. Marsalis and his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra join forces with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Edinburgh Festival Chorus and Jason Max Ferdinand Singers - all under the baton of the renowned James Gaffigan. With over 200 performers on stage, this glorious ‘thunder’ of a work is a monumental opening to our Usher Hall series. Arrive early to enjoy pop-up performances and refreshments. Strauss’s Elektra

Strauss’s Elektra

23 Aug 2026 - 23 Aug 2026

Part of the Anderson opera series Greek tragedy meets modern psychology in Richard Strauss’s audacious opera. Elektra is determined to avenge the murder of her father Agamemnon by her mother Klytämnestra - but will Klytämnestra destroy her first? Strauss evokes his characters’ larger-than-life emotions through massive orchestral forces and daring harmonies. Wild, violent episodes such as the epic confrontation between Elektra and her mother contrast with moments of exquisite tenderness, as when Agamemnon’s son Orest returns to this most dysfunctional of family homes. Karina Canellakis - noted for her impressive ‘command of large-scale musical architecture’ (The Guardian) - conducts the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and an outstanding cast. Leading dramatic sopranos Iréne Theorin and Nina Stemme perform the virtuoso roles of Elektra and Klytämnestra. The Anderson Opera Series, made possible by James and Morag Anderson, allows the Festival to bring internationally acclaimed opera to Edinburgh and ensures these unmissable performances remain accessible to the widest possible audience with additional support from the Embassy of Sweden in London Sung in German with English surtitles
JLCO plays Duke Ellington

JLCO plays Duke Ellington

11 Aug 2026 - 11 Aug 2026

A rare opportunity to experience Duke Ellington’s monumental jazz symphony, Black, Brown and Beige. Duke Ellington’s Black, Brown and Beige weaves the sounds of blues, spirituals and work songs into a suite for jazz orchestra. Ellington, troubled by clichéd representations of Black culture, felt it was ‘time a big piece was written from the inside’. His ambitious suite gives a powerful account of Black life in America, from slavery, through emancipation, segregation and military service, to a new era of prosperity and cultural assertiveness. In the years since its 1943 premiere, Black, Brown and Beige has been hailed as a remarkable musical and political statement. Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra recently released a definitive recording of the work. JLCO trombonist Chris Crenshaw conducts and Ekep Nkwelle joins to sing the haunting, melancholy ‘Blues theme mauve’. The orchestra is also joined by emerging stars of the American jazz scene, who will curate a surprise programme to complement Ellington’s masterpiece. Sung in English with surtitles

Beethoven 6 & Adès

Beethoven 6 & Adès

15 Aug 2026 - 15 Aug 2026

The LA Phil and conductor Gustavo Dudamel contrast Beethoven’s ‘Pastoral’ symphony with Thomas Adès’s Dante. The LA Phil returns to the Festival with their superstar conductor Gustavo Dudamel after their 2019 Festival performance triumphantly filled out Tynecastle Stadium. Both a classical and pop-culture phenomenon, Dudamel was the first classical artist to perform in the Super Bowl half-time show. With the orchestra itself being described as ‘the most important orchestra in America’ by the New York Times, together with Dudamel they make an unstoppable, Grammy Award-winning partnership. ‘No man on earth can love the country as I do’, declared Ludwig van Beethoven. And he put his love into music in his joyous ‘Pastoral’ Symphony. His celebration of nature features evocations of birdsong, a babbling brook and a timpani thunderstorm, and closes with a radiant hymn of thanksgiving. Thomas Adès’s Inferno is very different: an alternately terrifying and comic journey through Hell, as envisaged by the great Renaissance poet Dante in The Divine Comedy. Adès’s musical sound-painting is equally vibrant, from the fiery first movement which won the LA Phil a Grammy, to the slapstick dance depicting thieves devoured by reptiles. This is Dudamel’s 17th year as the LA Phil’s Music and Artistic Director - don’t miss the chance to experience their legendary partnership live. Supported by Dunard Fund

Beethoven 7 & Ortiz

Beethoven 7 & Ortiz

14 Aug 2026 - 14 Aug 2026

Join the LA Phil, conductor Gustavo Dudamel and singers from the Los Angeles Master Chorale for a feast of sonic beauty. The Grammy Award-winning partnership of Gustavo Dudamel, the LA Phil and singers from the ‘perennially superb’ (New Yorker) Los Angeles Master Chorale for the first concert of their International Festival residency, filled with rhythmic vitality and sonic beauty. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is irresistible, from the dignified and passionate theme of the second movement (a beloved choice for film soundtracks including The King’s Speech) to the sweep-you-off-your-feet melody of the finale. Dudamel has stated: ‘Gabriela Ortiz’s music speaks to both the body and the spirit, full of visceral primal rhythms and mysterious, soul-searching melodies’. Her glittering ballet score Revolución diamantina (Glitter Revolution) - inspired by Mexican feminist protests against state violence towards women - is a powerful and celebratory work. Ortiz plays on repetition to evoke the tenacity and relentless pursuit needed to enact change. The LA Phil performs the UK/Scottish premiere of this piece, which they premiered in 2023. This is Dudamel’s 17th year as the LA Phil’s Music and Artistic Director - don’t miss the chance to experience their legendary partnership live. The Golden Age of Hollywood

The Golden Age of Hollywood

24 Aug 2026 - 25 Aug 2026

The Sinfonia of London and conductor John Wilson take you on a glorious journey through the Golden Age of Hollywood. The allure of 1930s Hollywood enticed artists and audiences with the promise of glamour, optimism and escape. At its glittering heart was the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio, whose films remain central to American popular culture. The entire MGM music library was destroyed in 1969 and conductor John Wilson has devoted over 30 years to restoring the original orchestrations from the films. Now, he leads the Sinfonia of London, described as ‘one of the finest orchestras in the world’ (The Guardian), through music by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Richard Rodgers. EIF: Brass Fanfare - A Tribute to John Wallace
Join brass players from across Scotland in tribute to inspirational trumpeter, composer and educator John Wallace. Brass players from three of Scotland’s top orchestras join forces with The Wallace Collection ensemble, as well as young players from RCS Junior Conservatoire and StAMP, in tribute to late Scottish trumpeter John Wallace. Dedicating his life to music education, Wallace was principal of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for 12 years. He advocated for free instrumental tuition across Scotland, while continuing to perform in The Wallace Collection, which he founded in 1986. The concert includes two movements from his Symphony for Brass Band. In this large-scale work - fifty years in the making - Wallace pays tribute to the landscape and history of his native Fife and some of the memorable characters he encountered there. Also on the programme is Elgar Howarth’s brilliant 1977 arrangement for brass and percussion of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Mussorgsky based each movement on an artwork by his friend Viktor Hartmann, vividly depicting both real and fairytale subjects from a bustling French market to the imposing Great Gate of Kyiv. Supported by Brenda Rennie Programme includes: John Wallace 'Methilhill Scherzo' & 'Dunsire Street Rag' from Symphony Mussorgsky arr. Howarth Pictures at an Exhibition Bendinelli Sonata No.336
Mahler’s Das klagende Lied

Mahler’s Das klagende Lied

27 Aug 2026 - 27 Aug 2026

Seize a rare chance to hear Gustav Mahler’s epic cantata Das klagende Lied (The Song of Lamentation). The Edinburgh Festival Chorus performs with a team of first-rate soloists and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of their former Chief Conductor Donald Runnicles, who is credited as making the orchestra sound ‘explosively alert’ (The Scotsman). Mahler's Das klagende Lied is inspired by two chilling German fairytales and explores themes of fratricide and ghostly revenge. A jealous man murders his younger brother. When a wandering minstrel makes one of the victim’s bones into a flute, it sings the tale of the crime - with cataclysmic consequences. Mahler’s score anticipates his later great symphonies in its colourful orchestration and melodic beauty. Highlights include vivid depictions of idyllic woodland and a lively wedding feast, plangent lyrical solos and choral writing full of drama. For Gustav Holst, inspiration could come from the primal landscape of a Dorset heath, filtered through the imagination of Thomas Hardy. Or it could stretch beyond the solar system; discovering ancient myths and wondrous visions in the dance of the planets. And great tunes too - there’s a reason why Holst’s spectacular “symphonic suite” is one of the most beloved British classics, though if all you know of it is Jupiter or Mars, you’re in for a revelation. Ryan Wigglesworth guides us from Wessex to infinity, and joins Laura van der Heijden in Walton’s luminous Cello Concerto, her remarkable calling card since winning the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year 2012 - music written on Mediterranean shores and drenched in bittersweet song.

At the threshold of the twentieth century, Debussy dreamed of a realm of pure poetry, in a Prélude whose sensuality and warmth sent shivers of unexpected pleasure through western music. But as the century unfolded, countless composers were forced into exile in America: embracing (or resisting) the rhythms of jazz, the energy of modern life and the lush sounds of Hollywood. Today, Principal Guest Conductor Delyana Lazarova presents two great songs of exile and nostalgia. Rachmaninov’s Third Symphony glimmers with passion, yet conceals a profound sense of loss. And Korngold’s Violin Concerto dreams of Vienna under blue Californian skies: a stunning showcase for the “gorgeous, silvery” tone (The Times) of violinist Liya Petrova.
