The List

Wales Millennium Centre / Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru

The Wales Millennium Centre is a fixture of Cardiff's spectacular regeneration of the Cardiff Bay area, and has already reached iconic status in popular culture thanks to its multiple appearances in Cardiff-shot BBC TV shows such as Doctor Who and Torchwood. After a long struggle for funding, Zaha Hadid's impressive building opened its bilingual facade in 2004 and phase 2 was completed in 2009 with the opening of the BBC Hoddinott Hall. The Centre has multiple performance spaces, bars, coffee shops and the highly-rated (by the Guardian) ffresh restaurant. It also hosts the offices of numerous Welsh cultural organisations. Cardiffbus routes 7 and 8 stop near the centre, and the Cardiff Baycar route 6 runs a shuttle service from Cardiff Central railway station, which takes eight minutes each way. Alternatively, Cardiff Bay station is five minutes' walk away (follow Lloyd George Ave and the station is on the Bute St side of the intersection). There is ample parking in Pierhead St car park, directly adjacent to the Centre.

Probably best known for his soundtracks to film, television and video games, Christopher Tin is a popular name in cinematic music today, and his Piano Concerto, written for and performed by Lara Downes, receives its UK premiere, only a week after its world premiere. William Grant Still’s Festive Overture gives a celebratory flavour to the evening, whilst Copland’s Appalachian Spring encapsulates dance and frontier spirit. BBC National Chorus of Wales step front and centre in Barber’s own vocal arrangement of the Adagio for Strings set to the words of the Agnus Dei, and the combined forces of Orchestra and Chorus resound in Bernstein’s boldly spiritual and exuberant Chichester Psalms. To conduct we welcome celebrated African American conductor Kellen Gray.
Symphonic Dances

Symphonic Dances

4 Jun 2026 - 5 Jun 2026

Captivating vibrant theatric Stravinsky Song of the Nightingale Brahms Concerto for Violin & Cello Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances Principal Conductor Ryan Bancroft takes to the podium for his final concert in the title role as we draw our 2025-26 Season to a close, starting with Stravinsky’s symphonic poem Song of the Nightingale. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale, we hear the story of an emperor in his ornate Chinese palace and the glorious singing of nightingales that accompanies his life. BBC NOW Leader Lesley Hatfield then steps into the spotlight alongside former principal cellist Alice Neary for Brahms’ Double Concerto, and we explore Rachmaninov at his most inventive in his Symphonic Dances. With luscious shifting harmonies and the rhythmic vitality characteristic of his later style, Rachmaninov’s final complete composition, his Symphonic Dances, uses motifs derived from Russian Church music alongside quotes from his own first symphony, creating a stirring mix of nostalgia versus the big city bustle and driving energy of ‘Modern America’.

Constantinopoliad

Constantinopoliad

29 May 2026 - 26 Jun 2026

This experience is part of the Annwn Prize, a new global prize celebrating immersive storytelling from artists around the world. Nominated by an international community of curators and commentators, four shortlisted works come to Wales Millennium Centre, inviting you to step inside the story. Four worlds, one venue. An expanded cinema work that gathers its audience for an act of collective reading. Constantinopoliad is not just a work of storytelling; it is an invitation to discovery. It intertwines narrative with action, making us feel as though we are the first to stumble upon this archive, the first to unearth Cavafy’s story, to breathe life into his words. A response to the archive of the poet Constantine Cavafy, the story is inspired by the blank and torn-out pages in Constantinopoliad, an Epic, the journal the teenage Cavafy began when he and his family fled Alexandria; by lost and missing queer archives through time; and by the ghosts, both erotic and historical, that visit the older Cavafy in his poems. The selection committee commended its use of touch, imagery, sound, and words to create a vivid experience for audiences - inviting you to embark on a journey into the imagination of a young Cavafy as he explores his creative potential and sexuality. "My favourite response to this work was an audience member who described it as 'making love to a stranger through a book'. The work invites audiences into a sensual and concrete encounter with Cavafy’s life and poems: fingers making contact with history; illumination revealing images from between the pages; sounds conjuring the ghosts of 19th century Alexandrian cabarets. With words by sister sylvester, score by Nadah El Shazly, and illustrations by Efrîn Özyetis, Constantinopoliad is a multi-sensory encounter with the past, and with forgotten stories that can haunt us into new imaginings for the present." - sister sylvester.

Nominated by an international community of curators and commentators, four shortlisted works come to Wales Millennium Centre, inviting you to step inside the story. Four worlds, one venue. Step into total darkness and become the centre of a shifting constellation. Nowiswhenweare (the stars) is an immersive, interactive, light and sound installation guiding each visitor through an internal monologue about grief, community, and the one-way-ness of time. It is ultimately a story about you. Andrew Schneider’s powerful installation draws you into a contemplative and deeply personal encounter with time, memory and presence. An interactive theatrical installation where the audience steps into total darkness and become the centre of a shifting constellation. Guided by an unseen narrator, participants journey from complete sensory deprivation into a precisely programmed matrix of nearly 4,000 reactive LED lights and a 496-channel soundscape. The work draws visitors into a hyper-focus of the present, tracing every decision they have made leading to that precise moment. The selection committee praised its highly original approach to spatial storytelling, precise technical virtuosity and masterful pacing that invites audiences to reflect on how we spend our time and the meaning we discover in everyday acts. This experience is part of the Annwn Prize, a new global prize celebrating immersive storytelling from artists around the world. Nominated by an international community of curators and commentators, four shortlisted works come to Wales Millennium Centre, inviting you to step inside the story. Four worlds, one venue. Reawaken the forgotten history. We're in Montgomery, Alabama, in the heart of the segregated southern United States, on the 2:30 PM bus, March 2, 1955. Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old Black teenager, refuses to give up her seat to a White passenger. Despite threats, she remains seated. After being thrown in jail, she decides to sue the city and plead not guilty. No one ever dared to do such a thing at the time. And yet, no one remembers her name. Colored: The Unsung Life of Claudette Colvin is an immersive experience adapted from a biographical essay, written by Tania de Montaigne, that traces the story of Claudette Colvin and her journey from struggle to abandonment. When, 9 months later, Rosa Parks repeated the same act, everything changed. With the support of a young pastor who had recently arrived in Montgomery, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks became a hero, the spark that launched the civil rights movement. History was in the making. Claudette Colvin made it all possible, but she is the one who has been forgotten. Colored allows the audience to enter a setting that will soon be haunted by the ghosts of 1950s Alabama. Thanks to augmented reality, which like no other technology allows our present to meet the past, Claudette's story can become our story, entering our memories as a 'lived' moment in our own experience where we can each become witnesses to this heroic act. In a set specially designed for the experience, iconic scenes from Claudette Colvin's life during her fight for civil rights are replayed before your very eyes. Whether you're alone or accompanied, you'll be able to join your peers in a collective experience. The selection committee commended its exceptional theatrical quality, essential and skillful writing and directing, as well as its groundbreaking use of Extended Reality (XR) to evoke deep emotional connection. "Colored, the Unsung Life of Claudette Colvin" directed by Stéphane Foenkinos and Pierre-Alain Giraud, based on the work by Tania de Montaigne, produced by Novaya in partnership with the Centre Pompidou, co-produced with Flash Forward Entertainment (Taiwan). Winner of the Award for Best Immersive Work of the 77th Festival de Cannes.

Consensus Gentium

29 May 2026 - 26 Jun 2026

This experience is part of the Annwn Prize, a new global prize celebrating immersive storytelling from artists around the world. Nominated by an international community of curators and commentators, four shortlisted works come to Wales Millennium Centre, inviting you to step inside the story. Four worlds, one venue. “To offer a vision of the future and a greater understanding of the roles we could play in it” - Karen Palmer Consensus Gentium-a Latin phrase that means “if everyone believes it, it must be true”-is an interactive experience intended to drive discussion about data privacy, unconscious biases, and the power of technology. This interactive film invites you to make choices that help shape the story itself. Integrating cutting-edge facial detection and AI, audiences will be transported on a unique quest to discover what could come about if we succumb to unchecked surveillance. Through a smartphone-based experience, participants step into the role of someone hoping to visit their sick nana, navigating a government-run Global Citizen App that determines mobility status through constant monitoring. Using facial detection and AI, the film reads your expressions and decisions in real time, creating a unique, personalised journey, revealing how personal freedoms can be influenced, or restricted, by digital systems. The selection committee praised its emotionally charged, participant-driven narrative that powerfully explores digital citizenship, agency and surveillance - where the participants every choice reflects urgent questions of our connected future.

The Day the Man Stepped on the Moon
There is great truth behind the phrase: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”...and it doesn’t only apply to extraordinary situations like space travel. Many small, everyday gestures build beautiful and meaningful daily achievements. We propose a hypothetical journey to 21 July, 1969, when the whole world was watching a great feat. But what was happening down on Earth? This is a human, poetic story about people who, far from walking on the Moon, demonstrate the beauty of life - with its light and darkness, its strengths and vulnerabilities. These people witnessed that historic day when, for the first time, a man walked on the Moon. You are invited to join us on this journey into life - what it was, is, and will be. The countdown begins to reach the Sea of Tranquillity.

In an entertaining “birth preparation course”, performers from Theater Thikwa and the feminist collective hannsjana negotiate the big political questions that are addressed to their bellies every day. For example, what goes in: beer, cake, or children - and what is allowed to come out. Through humour, in Baby Bumps (or its German title "Bauchgefühl" - which translates to ‘gut feeling’) the performers take responsibility for themselves and others, develop new forms of reproduction, parenthood and care - or consciously decide against sharing their bodies and attention with anyone.

Welsh National Opera: La bohème

Welsh National Opera: La bohème

27 Sept 2026 - 3 Oct 2026

In the Latin Quarter of Paris, four young artists live for the moment, sharing what little they have; chasing big dreams and laughing through the cold. When Rodolfo meets Mimì, a quiet seamstress with a fading light, their connection is instant and unforgettable. But in a world shaped by poverty and passion, love burns brightly but all too briefly. Puccini’s deeply moving masterpiece captures the passion of youth through some of the most beautiful and recognisable music ever written. La bohème evokes the spirit and intensity of bohemian life: the joy of falling in love, the pain of letting go, and the fragile of it all. This acclaimed production reimagines this beloved story with striking clarity and emotional power. Set in a stark, monochrome world inspired by 1930s Paris where shadows linger and the presence of death is never far away. The result is a La bohème that feels both timeless and contemporary. It paints a vivid portrait of young lives lived on the edge, where every moment matters and every goodbye cuts deep. Original production Glyndebourne Conductor Corinna Niemeyer Director Floris Visser Rodolfo Carlos Cardoso Mimì Alexia Voulgaridou

She soon discovers his home is filled with locked doors and as she demands each one be opened, she uncovers not only the secrets of his past, but something far more unsettling. As darkness gathers, love and fear become impossible to separate. In the second half, the same stark setting becomes the ancient city of Thebes for Oedipus Rex. A plague grips the land, and its king is determined to uncover the truth behind it. As his search intensifies, he is forced to confront a destiny he cannot escape. What begins as a quest for answers, becomes a devastating revelation. Gothic, atmospheric and visually striking, this unified staging draws powerful connections between two timeless myths.
