John Bramwell

John Bramwell

6 Jul 2025 - 6 Dec 2025

John Harold Arnold Bramwell, to give him his full name, is perhaps best-known for his time as the songwriter and frontman of Manchester three-piece, I Am Kloot. However, he also possesses an enviable back catalogue as a solo artist and continues to work on new material under the guise of his latest band, John Bramwell & The Full Harmonic Convergence. Bramwell’s first studio output appeared in 1989, when he was performing and recording as Johnny Dangerously and entitled You Me & The Alarm Clock, an album The Guardian referred to as one of the ‘greatest albums you’ve never heard.’ Following a stint as a television presenter and as a member of the band, The Mouth, Bramwell formed I Am Kloot, with two members of The Mouth. They went on to record six studio albums, including the Mercury-Prize nominated album, Sky At Night. Since 2016, Bramwell has reverted to being a solo artist and tours continuously, around the UK and Europe. A home-recorded solo album, Leave Alone the Empty Spaces appeared in 2018 and the follow-up, a more expansive affair, with a working title of The Light Fantastic, is now scheduled for release in 2022.

Ranagri

Ranagri

4 Nov 2025 - 21 Apr 2026

Ranagri produce an electrifying mix of virtuosic instrumentals, haunting melodies, vivid storytelling and their unique take on old and new folk songs. The London based band are a combination of Irish and English musicians; Dónal Rogers (Vocals/Guitar), Eliza Marshall (Flutes/Whistles), Ellie Turner (Electric Harp) and Joe Danks (Bodhrán/Guitar). Ranagri were delighted to secure a record contract with Grammy Award Winning Record Label 'Stockfisch' in 2014 where they recorded the highly acclaimed SACD hybrid album 'Fort of the Hare'. They also published a book 'Song Folk Art' through Robinswood Press with an accompanying album 'Tradition' recorded throughout 2014. In 2015 Ranagri collaborated with legend crooner Tony Christie of 'Amarillo' fame, recording an album entitled The Great Irish Songbook, taking Tony back to his Irish Roots, and bringing their own style to many of the golden old Irish tunes that they grew up on. This was signed with both Stockfisch and Wrasse Records, and was followed by a large tour of the UK and Germany as part of Tony's Golden Anniversary Tour. Festival performances include Cambridge, Gate to Southwell, Wath, Stourbridge, Trinity, Bloom and Purbeck Folk Festivals. No strangers to large venues, Ranagri have performed at Birmingham Symphony Hall, Fairfield Halls, The Union Chapel, Buxton Opera House to name a few. Combining their love for world music, they collaborated with top Indian Musicians Kuljit Bhamra OBE, Sanjay Guha, M Balachander and members of Britten Sinfonia at The Bhavan Centre, London. In 2016 Ranagri worked with Grammy-nominated producer Graeme Pleeth on their latest album VOICES (recorded at Real World Studios) which combines their own songs and instrumentals with traditional folk Songs such as High Germany and The Snow It Melts The Soonest all performed and arranged in Ranagri's inimitable style. 2017 has seen Ranagri on tour with Justin Currie (of Del Amitri) at Islington Assembley Halls, Perth Concert Hall, Holmfirth Picturedrome and Cambridge Junction. They are currently finishing off writing their new album which will be recorded at Stockfisch early in 2018. Quotes and Reviews There's little to use as a point of reference when you discuss the sound created by Ranagri ... stunning, dazzling, remarkable...any of those will do, however the overriding word is different; and you could throw exciting in there too. Tim Carroll, FolkWords You're unlikely to hear anything more irresistible and more folky this year. Mike Ainscoe, Louder Than War Ranagri - both on the new album 'Voices' and on the stage - are a band that deliver a great sound. If they're not playing near you, buy the album, if they are - buy the album and go see. Also 'album of the week' Fatea Magazine Neil King, Fatea Magazine Creating a trademark sound that's becoming ever more familiar as they continue to make waves on the UK and European folk scene. Folk Radio UK "How often do you hear a sound that's completely new and immediately makes you want to dance? I'll be following Ranagri around, I hope they don't mind..." Katie Derham - BBC Ranagri's flute and harp infused set who wasn't conjuring up visions of the airier moments of sublime Jethro Tull was pitifully short, yet gave enough of a flavour to mark them on the list for the next possible wallet lightning raid on the CD stall. Mike Ainscoe - Louder Than War (review of Cambridge Folk Festival 2015). The standard of musicianship tonight was second to none as the band delivered two excellent sets. The band's musical magic was evident in some of the most flawless playing the Wheelhouse has been witness to over the last 77 shows the venue has staged. Allan Wilkinson - Northern Sky Magazine Quality contemporary songwriting enhanced by beautiful neo-Celtic sounds. Carl Corcoran - Presenter RTE Lyric FM's Blue of the Night Quite possibly one of the best bands we have seen in 2014. Their music is in the main self penned and lyrically has a folk feel to it, but the sound they produce is a mixture of music and rhythms from everywhere in the world. It is so very hard to find a genre to fit them into. Les Jones - Woodman Folk Club http://www.ranagri.com/
Matt Woosey Trio

Matt Woosey Trio

31 Oct 2025 - 1 Nov 2025

If you would like to be notified of all Malvern Cube events please sign up to our monthly mailing list HERE _"Very, very good indeed!"_ Paul Jones, BBC Radio 2 _“Completely convincing and a master at what he does – Matt is the real deal.” _ Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music _ "luminous originality and talent" "Genious" "Brilliant"_ The Times Matt Woosey has made a career of defying expectations. His albums break down the confines of genre. His performances span from eyeball-to-eyeball solo sets in fans’ living rooms, to thundering full-band explosions that shake the most prestigious venues in Europe. He’s an artist who slips the creative handcuffs of the industry, a trailblazer with no reverse gear, a guitar visionary whose palette bleeds into folk, rock, ambient and more, having been first turned on to the world of music by the blues. _“You’ve got to keep progressing,” reasons the British singer-songwriter. “Like John Martyn. Like Robert Plant. Like Radiohead…” _ 2020 // 2021. The New Album "Compass And The Sand" With an abundance of time, and like most musicians during this period, Matt has allowed himself to step right back from everything he has done up until and including 2019's "Live! in Gallaghers Nest" album and take stock, evaluate what kind of a musician he wants to be and decide in which direction to aim next. Without the all-encompassing lifestyle of being on the road and without the self-induced pressure to produce a new album or new material, Matt has found his zone, the place he wants to be musically. We find ourselves looking at a musician who has managed to break free of the strangle hold of the music world and who walks now with no weight on his shoulders and a new evaluation of what he "must" do. The gift of time has been the most positive experience. "I've really been able to work on this album, like I've never had chance to do before. I spent so much time working on the original demos. It has been a joy to do and totally stress free! Allowing other musicians to come in a do their thing at their own pace has been very productive. For me some of the most enjoyable sessions have been working on the backing vocals. That is one of the biggest differences between this album and the rest of my work - the melodic interplay of more than one vocal line". "Realising the scope and limitations of my own musical abilities has also been key. It has brought me so much joy to have ideas or parts oin my head and getting other musicians in to bring those ideas to life, rather than doing a half-baked effort myself. Having other people do a lot of the guitar parts has been such great fun". On listening to the work that has gone into the writing of the album, it is evident that Matt Woosey has found a new flow. Having always been one with a fear of repeating himself, Matt seems to have found his way out of a stale and musically boring blues scene whilst often harking back to the music which first turned his ear. If roots/blues music is the seed, "Compass And The Sand" is his forest. ★★★ Yet all the great artists come with a backstory, and there’s no doubt this artist was forged by an early career that took in passion, hardship and redemption. Rewind to the late-’90s, then, and as the son of forces parents stationed in Germany, Matt found himself packed off to a Bristol boarding school with a rudimentary cassette player and a stack of dubious tapes. He had little use for ABBA and Simply Red, but was spellbound by the souped-up, shape-shifting power-blues of Led Zeppelin’s debut and II. “That’s when I fell in love with music,” he says. “When I knew it would be part of my life.” That early taste for Led Zeppelin quickly spilled over into blues-rock heavyweights like Rory Gallagher, Paul Kossoff and Peter Green, with Tim Buckley and John Martyn also stirred into the mix (“I always loved the way they used their voices as an instrument”). Soon, passive enjoyment alone no longer enough scratched the itch, and Matt duly pinballed through a string of local bands that included a Thin Lizzy covers outfit. “I had guitar lessons at school on nylon-string acoustic,” he recalls. “I played electric guitar in other people’s bands, and did a few backing vocals. Then I started writing my own material and singing, going out on my own to open-mics and folk clubs.”“When I listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Rory Gallagher or Roy Buchanan play electric,” he reasons, “I just can’t add anything to that. For me, playing acoustic guitar in an inventive way that’s different to anyone else is the most powerful thing I can do. I like to do things that turn heads, but at the end of the day, it’s all about the songs.” Indeed, by the time he came to record his solo debut in 2008 – an album released independently and flogged at gigs – Matt had established his ethos of all-original songs, whatever the cost. “I’ve never performed many covers live,” he says, “and my studio albums have all been my own material. As a gigging musician, that’s made my life ten times harder.”Right now, Matt stands at his most fascinating creative crossroads to date. It’s two years since the release of "Live! at Gallaghers Nest": the ground-breaking album, capturing the most daring music of Matt’s career, it was toasted by Classic Rock as “one of the year’s most ambitious and electrifying releases”, and the ripples spread far beyond his early fanbase. “The reaction was great,” he nods. “it picked up people who aren’t necessarily blues fans, because it was a much broader album than anything I’d done before.”The same might be said for the twist-and-turn career of Matt Woosey. In a world where mainstream musicians make all the obvious moves, here is one artist who travels without a map. “I have a real fear of repeating myself,” he says. “My music has to be creative and artistic. It has to keep pushing things forward. I just want people to come with me on my journey, whatever changes I take.” www.mattwoosey.co.uk [//www.mattwoosey.co.uk] click here to... Wreckless needs little introduction he wrote and recorded the classic Whole Wide World and had a hit with it back in 1977. Since then its been a hit for countless other artists including The Monkees, Cage The Elephant and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, featured in the 2022 Expedia / Superbowl / Ewan MacGregor travel ad, and most recently in the podcast Smartless. As Eric Goulden its a little more complicated a musician, artist, writer, recording engineer and producer, he didnt like either the music business, the mechanics of fame or the name hed been given to hide behind, so he crawled out of the spotlight and disappeared into the underground. He went on to release twenty something albums in forty something years under various names The Len Bright Combo, Le Beat Group Electrique, The Donovan Of Trash, The Hitsville House Band, and with his wife as one half of Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby, finally realizing he was stuck with the name Wreckless Eric.

Phil Bates [ELO PT2]

Phil Bates [ELO PT2]

20 Sept 2025 - 20 Sept 2025

Phil’s connection with ELO music goes back 30 years when, in 1993, he joined Bev Bevan, Kelly Groucutt, Mik Kaminski, Lou Clark - all ELO members - and Eric Troyer, in ELO Part2. ELO Part2 toured the world in the next 6/7 years, doing concerts in USA, Canada, SouthAmerica, Central America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Russia, Eastern Europe, Europe, Scandinavia, and the UK, many times with full orchestras. In fact, Phil’s connection with ELO goes farther back to the 1970s when Phil’s band, Trickster, were labelmates, resulting in Trickster supporting ELO on their groundbreaking 1978 Spaceship Tour. In the 1980, Phil formed Don’t Panic with wife, Joanna Bates, and spent 3 years playing in Middle East in Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi. Phil and Jo were also members of Birmingham legends, Quill. 1990s saw Phil sing the theme tine from the TV show, The Gladiators, alongside songwriting, lead vocals, guitars and bass for AOR band, Atlantic. The album, ‘Power’ is legend amongst AOR fans to this day. 1993 to 2003 saw Phil take a break from music and study for BA Hon in History at Lampeter University. Phil joined Bev Bevan in a project that became Bev Bevan’s Move in 2003, but left to join old friends from ELO Part2 in The Orchestra in 2007. Alongside this, Phil has been the major player in a German ELO project, which still gigs extensively all over Europe, and points east, to this day. These days known as Phil Bates Band play the music of ELO. Phil’s solo albums - Naked (1996) - Agony and Ecstasy (1998) - Alter Ego (2003) - One Sky (2005) - Retrospektiv (2007). Then a LONG gap, which will be broken by the release of ‘The Story So Far …….’, probably early 2024, and ‘The Truth’, hopefully later in 2024. A 3-track single ‘Port in a storm’, ‘Empty Rooms’, plus one of Phil’s re-imaginings of an ELO song will escape later in 2023. ‘Up Close and Personal’ sees Phil solo, playing reimaginings of ELO, Beatles, Trickster, Atlantic, classic songs from the extensive pop/rock/blues songbook, and songs from some of Phil’s favourite songwriters - Stevie Wonder, Tom Waits, Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen, Gerry Rafferty, Keb Mo, Ry Cooder …… plus a smattering of blues, and a soupćon of Celtic. Plus, some talking about 56 years of Phil Bates musical history ….. if anyone wants to hear an old fart talking about ‘the good old days’
West Malvern Ring

West Malvern Ring

15 Aug 2025 - 17 Aug 2025

WEST MALVERN RING A story for our times, a production from our village, West Malvern Ring is an ambitious, audacious reimagining of Richard Wagers Ring Cycle, compressed to fit the Social Club stage and the attention thresholds of mere mortals. Inspired by the much-missed Rob Rankin, musical director Judith Sanoon and creative director Tim White have press-ganged a veritable pantheon of local talent into participating in this epic tale of Gods, Valkyries, Rhinemaidens and Giants. From the subterranean forges of the Niebelung to the soaring heights of Valhalla, mischief, murder and mayhem infect the mythological world of the opera. With a penchant for potions, transforming into dragons and engaging in relations proscribed by the Common Book of Prayer, the characters cannot help but succumb to the curse of the Ring. Heroic deeds and acts of love wage war with evil yet it requires a supreme gesture of sacrifice to purge the world of malevolence. With an original adapted score and script, live action and video sequences shot around the village, West Malvern Ring surges with the energy of a community that breathed new life into our local pub. Come along, be inspired, and carry the baton onward.
