The List

Westminster Abbey

A Gothic abbey church, Westminster Abbey is the traditional site for the coronation and burial of British monarchs. Several royal weddings have also taken place at Westminster Abbey, most recently the wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton. Though a church has stood on the site since the 7th century, construction on the present-day structure began in 1245 under King Henry III. Several famous figures in British cultural history have also been buried in what is known as the abbey's 'Poet's Corner', including Charles Dickens, Geoffrey Chaucer, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Percy Bysshe Shelley and more.
