On the nights line up we have: Headliner Archie Kelly An endearing stage manner, laughed so much I got a stitch - Chortle Described by Peter Kay as a very funny fella, Archie is best known for his portrayal of Kenny (Dalglish) Senior in the award winning Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights. He has also appeared in a number of popular TV shows such as Peter Kay's Car Share, Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights, Coronation Street and Max and Paddy's Road To Nowhere. Peter Brush Compellingly hilarious, first class gag writing an original and achingly funny voice A highly distinctive performer and defy writer of finely crafted jokes, Peter Brush unassuming takes the stage with his slight bespectacled frame and scruffy hair, before consummately conquering it with an arsenal of razor sharp quirky one liners and peerlessly original routines, all delivered in an amusingly awkward fashion. PHIL BEER @ the HUNGRY HORSE FOLK CLUB Whitby Club, Dunkirk Lane, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, CH65 6QF
Quote by Mr Phil Beer - "He is a good instrumentalist and sings a bit". Reply - "Don't be shy Phil. You are a wonderful multi-instrumentalist and singer with many talents". Biog: (Wikipedia) - 'PHIL BEER first began to play fiddle, guitar, and mandolin whilst still at school in Teignmouth, Devon. This passion for acoustic music was especially influenced by the Davey Graham album Folk, Blues and Beyond. He played his first gig when he was fourteen in a band called Retrospect with Richard Entwistle, John Allman and Martin Pike and other musicians, and by the time he was sixteen he was performing regularly. Beer worked with Paul Downes as a duo from 1974 and also in the Arizona Smoke Revue 1980. He was a key member of Johnny Coppin's band (ex-Decameron), and together they collaborated with Nigel Mazlyn Jones on his 1979 Sentinel album. He toured with Mike Oldfield in 1979 and also recorded some tracks at Oldfield's Througham studio. Beer joined The Albion Band in 1984 and stayed with them until 1991, touring extensively at home and abroad, and recording many albums. Show of Hands became a full-time partnership from 1991. Beer continues to do session work, most notably on The Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels album, Steve Harley's Poetic Justice and countless other mainstream and less high-profile projects. Recent projects include two albums for folk fiddle player Jackie Oates, two albums for former Spinners singer Mick Groves, an album for folk musician Jez Lowe, an album for singer-songwriter Tom Palmer and an album for north Devon singer Jenna.[3][4] In 2015, Beer (alongside his fellow Show of Hands band members Steve Knightley and Miranda Sykes), was awarded an honorary doctorate of music from the University of Plymouth, to commemorate "great distinction in [their] professional lives". We at the Hungry Horse Folk Club are indeed privileged to be able to present to you for the first time, Phil as a solo artist. This concert will be a sell-out. Please ensure you purchase your tickets in advance via the ticket agency - wegotttickets
JEZ LOWE @ the HUNGRY HORSE FOLK CLUB, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, CH65 6QF
Sony Academy Award Winning Singer/Songwriter JEZ LOWE pays another visit to the Hungry Horse Folk Club after too long a break since his last visit in 2023. Biog: A double nomination in the 2015 BBC Folk Awards for best singer and best new song was a timely reminder of Jez Lowe's standing in the UK folk and acoustic music scene. Not only he is one of the busiest live performers in the country, but his songs are among the most widely sung by other performers, whether by long-established acts like Fairport Convention, The Dubliners and Bob Fox, or by the new breed of stars like The Unthanks, The Young Uns, Megson and The Duhks. Jez's own long-established band The Bad Pennies (featuring Kate Bramley, Andy May and David De La Haye) continue to attract a huge following, and his other collaborations with The Pitmen Poets (with Billy Mitchell, Bob Fox and Benny Graham), The Broonzies (alongside fellow-veterans Maggie Holland, Chris Parkinson and Roger Wilson), Men at Words (with James Keelaghan and Archie Fisher) and with fellow-songwriter Steve Tilston, show a willingness to push boundaries and venture boldly into pastures new. Meanwhile, his involvement in the award-winning BBC series The Radio Ballads continues, with his song The Wrong Bus singled out for inclusion on Radio 4's Pick of the Year in 2018, and five more of his contributions included in the BBC Radio broadcast featuring the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in November 2019. Many of these songs also featured on his 2016 solo album, The Ballad Beyond, the success of which prompted a feature in fRoots magazine and glowing reviews the world over. You can find out much more about this wonderfully talented performer on his website. We are however delighted to have him with us again. The concert is sure to be a sell out so please get your tickets early.
