Aziz Ibrahim
Renowned punjabi guitarist composer from Longsight, Aziz Ibrahim has written and performed with the late Farhad Humayun (Overload Pakistan), Nasser Al Mizdawi (Libya), Ian Brown, The Stone Roses, Paul Weller, Simply Red, Asia, Stephen Wilson, Yukihiro Takahashi (Yellow Magic Orchestra, 60s folk pioneer Donovan, MC Akala, Joi, Rebel MC, Hot Chocolate and many other globally celebrated artists. He also founded the Asian Blues Collective with tabla maestro Dalbir Singh Rattan and is striving for the recognition of guitar players across the South Asian diaspora through the label Desi GuitR and The Guitar Collective. He demonstrates a genre fluidity like no other, appearing on Mercury Prize winning artist Talvin Singhs album OK one minute and then performing with western mainstream artists on shows and albums across very diverse genres. Currently Aziz regularly plays with traditional Japanese artists in collaboration at the Manchester Doki Doki Festival.
His solo work consists of the album Lahore to Longsight which was displayed in Manchester museum as pioneering work by a Muslim South Asian British artist born in the UK and part of the history of British Music. The precursor to this was the EP Middle Road and ultimate album being Rusholme Rock.
Expect an evening filled with iconic tracks alongside Azizs own unique and powerful brand of guitar mastery.
Alice Phelps
Alice Phelps is an all-singing, non-dancing double bassist who enjoys creating genre-bending music for curious minds. Expect a mix of blues, folk and soul tunes from the last 100 years and some thoughtful chat about why the bus drivers are right; she probably should have played the flute.
She also plays for a number of Manchester-based ensembles: The Untold Orchestra, Kaleidoscope Orchestra, Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra and The Villanelles, an all female jazz/pop outfit.
