Sound Affects #24: Miranda Sawyer, Toby Manning & more TBC
Sound Affects [http://instagram.com/soundaffectsnight] is a night of talks about music and subcultures, how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft. [http://jakhutchcraft.com] Guest speakers: Miranda Sawyer - Journalist who has written about pop music since 1988, beginning on Smash Hits before moving to Select, The Face and the Observer. She's interviewed everyone from Liam Gallagher to Tricky, PJ Harvey to Pulp, Stormzy to Billie Eilish. In her new book, Uncommon People, she chooses twenty key songs from the Britpop era, delving into the surprising stories behind them and their unlikely creators. The book takes us back to when Jarvis Cocker became a national hero, Trainspotting was a global hit, fire-starting seemed like a good night out – and it felt as though the revolution was happening. Toby Manning - Writer on pop culture, whose work has appeared in The Quietus, Tribune, Jacobin and New Statesman, and whose previous books include The Rough Guide to Pink Floyd, and chapters in collections on The Velvet Underground and Talking Heads. His new book, Mixing Pop and Politics is not a history of political music, but a political history of popular music. Spanning the early 50s to the present, it shows how, from doo-wop to hip-hop, punk to crunk and grunge to grime, music has both reflected and resisted the political events of its era.
