March: A look at the garden in late Winter - 4th March 2025 We will begin by taking a look at some of the key moments in the gardening year at Charleston and exploring where the garden is placed before the arrival of Spring. Our Head Gardener Harry Hoblyn will talk you through the key Winter-flowering plants in the garden at Charleston and pay close attention to emerging bulbs and self-seeders. He will walk you through the borders in the Walled Garden and investigate plant spacing and layout, integration of annuals and biennials, and how to manage bulbs in a successional planting matrix. We will discuss Winter pruning (roses and apples), propagation (seed sowing and division), compost creation and mulching, and natural plant supports. Participants will have an opportunity to weave their own creations using locally-harvested hazel. This workshop includes an exclusive tour of the modernist home and studio at Charleston, providing a glimpse into its rich artistic history. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day, including a delicious lunch made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients as well as some of Charleston's own produce, and weather permitting, tea cooked on a communal campfire. Please bring your own secateurs, suitable outdoor clothing and boots for all weathers, and a notebook.
