Olivier Bancoult - A Cry For Freedom - Book Launch

This event focuses on the recent book covering the life of Olivier Bancoult, one of the population of the Chagos Islands evicted in the late 1960s to create a UK/US Military base on Diego Garcia. Prevented from returning home after a medical visit to Mauritius, Oliviers life has been a struggle over decades to regain the paradise islands where he was born. Enduring the poverty and bewilderment of Exile, he has led the Chagossian peoples fightback. This book tells the story of Oliviers life as the backdrop to their struggle, catapulting him to the forefront of a series of high-profile law cases in every court in England, to the European Court and to the Supreme Court of the USA. Finally the United Nations and the World Court took notice of their plight and has decreed that it is Mauritius, rather than the UK, that is sovereign of these islands, leading to the great powers agreeing to hand them back- and finally paving the way to Olivier and the Chagossians returning home.
Launch to be moderated by theRt. Hon. Jeremy Corbyn MP.
