Carmen

This Trinity, the Oxford Opera Society presents a glittering new production of Bizets Carmen, bringing Oxfords finest performers and musicians together in the Sheldonian Theatre for one night only!
Accompanied by Bizets magnificent score, complete with the Ernst Guirauds beloved recitatives, our fresh interpretation of the worlds most popular opera thrusts audiences into the heart of 1950s Seville, amid the chaos of Maquis armed resistance against a crumbling Francoist State. Cultural change is afoot, as Hollywood glamour sweeps the nation, steamrolling Franco-Catholic ideals and redefining womanhood forever.
In a world changing rapidly around her, we meet Carmen: our free-spirited star of the show. Passionate, but nave, she throws herself into the Maquis resistance. However, after falling for Don Jos, a local corporal whose outward sincerity hides a dark and twisted nature, she realises that her fate may not be in her own hands. She is forced to make a choice: remain loyal to the Maquis and the hope for a better future that it represents; or choose a star-crossed love?
Will the choice she makes change her fate, or has it already been written on the cards?
This production is suitable for ages 12+ (recommended), and contains theatrical violence, murder, and the simulated use of alcohol and tobacco products.
