Music & Mayhem: Rebellion – Queer cabaret with ambition and heart
A blending of spoken word, live music and performance art that challenges cabaret conventions

Music & Mayhem: Rebellion is exactly what the title promises: a rebellious push against the current trends within cabaret. The show blends queer storytelling, spoken word, live music and performance art in an effort to challenge audiences while celebrating queer voices and experiences.
There is a clear ambition at the heart of this production. Important queer stories, historical moments and community voices are threaded throughout the evening, giving the show a sense of purpose beyond simple entertainment. At times the educational elements feel slightly misdirected from the show’s central through-line, but the desire to platform queer narratives and history is commendable and forms an important backbone.
Artists Sara and Bella, alongside the band NonBinaryCode, play a crucial role in grounding the show. Their presence lifts the production and gives it a sense of safety and cohesion when the structure occasionally wobbles. The band in particular delivers some of the evening’s strongest moments; their lead vocalist’s powerful and assured voice cuts cleanly through the room, providing a genuine musical highlight and a reminder of the show’s potential.
The production ventures into emotionally heavier territory through sections of spoken word and the performances that follow them, clearly coming from a place of honesty and lived experience that add depth to the storytelling. Introducing some gentle trigger warnings ahead of the performance could further support audiences, allowing viewers to engage with these powerful stories with a little more preparation and appreciation.
Structurally, the individual numbers are generous in length, allowing performers the space to explore their ideas and musicality. With some light tightening and additional blocking to suit the venue, these could become even sharper and allow the show’s strongest moments to land with greater impact. For now, Music & Mayhem: Rebellion is a heartfelt and ambitious celebration of queer voices and stories, with standout musical talent and a clear commitment to community storytelling, even if the rebellion occasionally loses its focus. The core material is there; a touch more refinement will help the spirit of the show shine even brighter, allowing this rebellious cabaret to evolve into something far more potent.
Music & Mayhem – Rebellion continues at Ukiyo, Gluttony until March 22.
