10 cracking craft beer venues in Glasgow

Bavaria Brauhaus
30 Bothwell Street
Nowhere else in the land can say they pour all of Munich’s ‘Big Six’ breweries on draft. You can also expect radlers, pilsners, bocks and other lager varieties from Germany and Austria at this bastion to purity laws and a particular, fantastic beer heritage.

Grunting Growler
51 Old Dumbarton Road
Everyone knows Jehad from Grunting Growler if they drink craft beer in Glasgow. His bottle shop and tasting room is constantly pushing the scene forward, seeking out new breweries and doing tastings and launches. He proudly displays his Chicago roots with a Bears top and NFL Red Zone on the screen every Sunday, while serving some serious chicken wings.

Inn Deep
445 Great Western Road
Supping a hazy pale doesn’t get any better than when you’re doing it from Inn Deep’s beer garden looking out onto the River Kelvin. They strike a lovely balance of around 20 rotating lines from (mainly) UK breweries and another 20 permanent ones, including very keenly priced stuff from Williams Brothers and some premium Euro options. It makes for a healthily mixed clientele of punters with craft credentials, or dogs, or with student ID.

Koelschip Yard
686–688 Pollokshaws Road
At some point or another, any brewery that matters has been poured or hosted by Koelschip Yard. The name refers to a piece of sour beer apparatus but the focus is always split between hazy pales and big imperial stouts alongside the (considerable) sour beer presence. They’ve always got a Czech-style side pour lager on tap, often do break-even kegs and keenly priced beers to offset the spenny stuff, and also do cask too.

Koelschip Yard

Redmond's Of Dennistoun
304 Duke Street
The only pub in Scotland that’s got Augustiner Helles from Munich and the holy trinity of Irish stouts (Guinness, Beamish, Murphy’s) all on tap. Check out monthly craft-tap takeovers and food tie-ins, and fridges with 100-plus craft, German and Belgian options, paired with a feverish commitment to pouring it all in fancy glassware.

Shilling Brewing Co
92 West George Street
The go-to place in the city centre and the only in-house microbrewery anywhere CHECK. Thirty lines with a particular emphasis on Scottish breweries as well as hazy pales aplenty and a big stone pizza oven at the back that they put to formidable use.

The Wee Beer Shop
623 Pollokshaws Road
It’s both remarkable and admirable that owner Niall seems to a) be permanently on-hand and b) have tried every single beer on his formidable shelves. Be it a strong Belgian ale or limited release German drop, or some achingly expensive North American can, if it can be stocked in Glasgow, The Wee Beer Ship is your best bet.

Also try... WEST Brewery’s WEST On The Green, serving all of that Glasgow-based outfit’s German-style beers, Drygate’s taproom which is the only place to try their small-batch stuff, and Kinning Park’s Old Toll Bar for a tight, rotational line-up that isn’t afraid to push the boat out; main picture: Inn Deep.
