10 places to eat and drink around Broughton Street

Bistro Coco

32b Broughton Street
Francophile favourites come with a pop of creativity at this neighbourhood spot serving outstanding food in a laid-back atmosphere. The chateaubriand for two has couples fighting over the final, tender bite, and rabbit served three ways on one plate shows skill in the kitchen.

Frenchie

14 Broughton Street
Alison and Fabrice Bouteloup (formerly of The Barley Bree in Perthshire) quietly took over this spot from Rollo in 2025 and they’ve retained the bites/bowls/plates format. But there’s a fresh energy around the place, with slick service and a few new dishes that embrace Asian influences while others lean into comforting and classical French cooking.

L’escargot Bleu

56 Broughton Street
Snails drowning in garlic butter for starters, spicy steak tartare and beef bourguignon that falls apart as soon as the fork touches mark this stalwart restaurant out as the epitome of French dining. Chef Fred Berkmiller integrates produce from his kitchen garden into many of his dishes, meaning even the green salad side is a joy.

Lucky Yu

53–55 Broughton Street
Riding the bao wave of 2015, Lucky Yu has survived the wane in demand for squishy white buns by branching out into Asian fusion small plates. There are still gyoza and bao, but sandos and skewers dripping with umami sticky sauce are a welcome expansion to the menu.

Thamel

7–11 East London Street
Himalayan hot pot here is deliciously tangy, lamb naga packed with spice and garlic naan dripping with butter. What’s not to love? Add elaborate cocktails that smoke with dry ice and you’ve got everything for a night out. Packed with plants and painted a riot of orange and yellow, the surroundings are just as delightful.

Vinette

36 Broughton Street
Chef Stuart Ralston’s venture into French cuisine doesn’t disappoint. The atmosphere is date-night perfect and even the simple-looking signature burger is a decadent treat. The menu changes with the season, but expect prime cuts of meat alongside foraged mushrooms, rich jus and creamy sauces.

Also try… the street’s fine array of drinking spots, including The Basement with its incredible selection of tequila and mezcals, wine bar Pickles for a glass and grazing board, The Keller taproom for freshly brewed wheat beer and The Broughton for a superior classic pub experience.
