Art And Vintage
3 Lyne Street
Run by a chef and an artist near Abbeyhill Colonies, this is a welcoming space to enjoy a big breakfast, loaded sandwich, sourdough toastie or taco, and peruse the contemporary art on display in changing exhibitions. Semi-regular dinner nights are BYOB and a lot of fun.
Herringbone Abbeyhill
Royal Terrace Gardens, London Road
These former public conveniences have been transformed into a welcoming light-wood and glass space; the huge outdoor terrace, adorned with stringed lights (plus heaters), is one of the best al fresco spots in the city. There’s a strong burger game and a nicely varied menu to keep all diners happy.
Kitchen Table By Twelve Triangles
22–24 Easter Road
The love of good sourdough and local ingredients come together in a gorgeous neighbourhood café. Big focaccia sandwiches are hard to beat: try one with chicken and crisp chicken skin, roast fennel and jalapeño labneh, or packed with carrot bhajis, pickles and yoghurt. The Basque cheesecake with berries is outrageously good.
Little Fitzroy
46 Easter Road
Coffee aficionados know that the queue here is worth it, and happily now there are seats inside, too (next door at Little Sitz-roy, geddit?). Alongside changing coffee options, you can pick up bags of beans from top speciality roasteries around Scotland, vegan sandwiches and assorted pastries.
Montrose
1 Montrose Terrace
A gorgeous low-intervention wine bar and casual restaurant from the Timberyard team. Either order interesting plates à la carte (like hogget, flamingo peas, shishito peppers and mint, or skate, kabocha squash and shrimp) or book a sharing menu for a group and let the kitchen surprise you.
Red Kite Café
7–8 Cadzow Place
A light and art-filled café at the heart of the community in Abbeyhill, with space to meet friends and linger over coffee and cakes. You can’t order badly across the brunch menu, but the Turkish eggs with chilli and pickled onions is excellent, as is the brioche French toast with berry compote and yoghurt.
Also try... a pint at Old Eastway Tap or The Mash Tun (both Easter Road), tacos and cocktails at the quirky Safari Lounge, Italian focaccia and arancini to take away at Polentoni and Polish comfort food at The Percy.pl.
