The street food offerings at The Barras Market have exploded in the last year or two with weekend punters flocking for a taste of what’s on offer. The range of vendors provides a great opportunity to take a culinary trip around the world.

Haggis Gu Leòr celebrates our national dish in burgers, on nachos, as bon bons and, of course, with neeps and tatties, plus adults get a free whisky nip with every plate. Popup Street Food do medium-rare Scottish steak with chips, served with peppercorn sauce, chimichurri or truffle and bone marrow butter. Also dishing up great Scottish produce is The Fisherman’s Chip, doing good-value langoustines and ‘caught by my dad’ specials such as lobster or scallops, all hauled into the family boat around the Firth Of Clyde. The popular Monster Munchies mixes up classic fish and chip shop suppers at eye-catching prices, alongside satay chicken burgers, bao and loaded fries.

Heading into Europe, get a taste of the Med with grilled chicken wraps, loaded fries and souvlaki from the excellent Greek Street Yeeros. In the market building, there are Italian favourites at Carmen’s Cucina, with polpette served with sugo and parmesan (or in a meatball sandwich), lasagne, pasta, arancini and specials such as risotto and chicken Milanese. Finish up with cannoli or tiramisu.

Cafe XO

The Middle East comes to Glasgow with Iraqi-style falafel and homemade hummus in wraps, tacos and salads at Fellali Café. Asian cuisine is found at Aunt Dordordor with her pan-fried soup dumplings, filled with pork. For Thai flavours, Hera Street Kitchen dish out massaman curry, green curry and khao pad. Popular Glasgow pop-up Cafe XO flit around the world for their sando fillings, such as Korean fried chicken, chicken satay and fish fingers, paired with crispy fried potatoes with gochujang mayo. Filipino street food is on the menu at Josie Pops Kitchen with barbecue dishes of pork belly or chicken leg served with rice and salad.

For US-style pizza, Anxious Pete’s specialises in NY slices and full pies, with Detroit and Sicilian versions also on offer. If you fancy top tacos, nachos and burritos, expect to queue at Alma Mexicana for Tex-Mex classics containing beef birria, chicken tinga, chilli and veggie options. Or check out delicious South American specialities at Colombian Bites such as arepas, empanadas and tostadas; main picture: Greek Street Yeeros.
