How would you cope should the world fall to a zombie apocalypse?

Living A Little ★★★★☆

If The Odd Couple took place during a zombie apocalypse, you’d end up with something not too far away from Living A Little. Rough, un-PC Rob and mild-mannered Paul have it pretty cushty, holed up in their flat with all the little luxuries of life (electricity, hot showers, endless alcohol supplies, and ice) before it all went south. Penelope bursts through their door wielding a katana, and after establishing she’s unbitten, this stranger is welcomed to the party.

Finlay Bain’s play feels like a metaphor for social inequality. The world burns outside the walls of the flat while Rob and Paul surround themselves with their belongings, living under the mantra of ‘you could get bit at any time, so you may as well live a little’. Penelope is disgusted by their individualistic outlook and her tales from the outside provide a contrast between the haves and have-nots. The pace is fast, and there’s plenty of comedy in Rob’s creative swearing, Paul’s perfect slapstick moments and Penelope’s needle-sharp retorts.

The Fringe hasn’t been without its share of zombie plays over the years, but Bain’s take on the genre doesn’t fall foul of clichés. We never see a limping, moaning zombie or the world beyond the flat. Tales of the outside from Penelope are enough to world-build an entire apocalypse; that’s the strength of both the writing and the acting.

Underbelly Cowgate, until 28 August, 6.55pm.
