Hannah Fairweather: Just A Normal Girl Who Enjoys Revenge ★★★★☆

Hannah Fairweather is the self-proclaimed ‘Taylor Swift of comedy’, and her show certainly reflects the quiet, calculated frustration of the pop sensation. Just A Normal Girl Who Enjoys Revenge is centred around Fairweather’s list of people who have wronged her; like Santa’s naughty list, but he gets much less flack for his. ‘People assume I’m petty when they see the show’s title,’ Fairweather says, but her soft-spoken comedy is not the bitter tirade the name may suggest.
There are delightful puns, some dark and some dirty, cropping up when you least expect it. Fairweather talks a mile-a-minute and some of the laughs are lost as she ploughs on to another anecdote; it’s as if she’s trying to fit 90 minutes of material into just one hour. She rockets through years of sexism during her golf scholarship at university in the southern US, her time in the accountancy sector, and, finally, in stand-up comedy.
But it’s not all doom and gloom. Indeed, she says she doesn’t want to be the sad clown trope. There’s a warmth and friendliness to her demeanour that leaves you feeling like you’ve seen an uplifting hour of comedy, despite the subject matter.
