Ben Hart: The Labyrinth magic review – Meandering mythical maze
Ben Hart’s mixed bag of magic tricks wanders down a few dead-end trails, but the pay-off packs a punch
With magician Ben Hart, one thing is certain: if you think you know where his show is going, you’re wrong. Initially, The Labyrinth seems overly fond of its namesake. A disjointed sequence of mentalism, sleight of hand and shadow puppetry feels almost lost, threatening to disconnect the audience, struggling to reclaim those who drop off in its exploration of small choices and their eventual purpose. Pulling on Ariadne’s red thread, Hart draws from the Minotaur myth, reviving a few antiquated routines that, while impeccably executed and clad in seductive dressings, will feel familiar to magic veterans.
Yet, for all the meandering set, the centre of this maze delivers a staggering, glorious reveal. Sown from the moment you enter the Palais Du Variété, the ultimate pay-off is a masterclass in narrative illusion, delivering some of the finest Fringe magic, even if the path to reach it strays into the dark.
