Fil Milton wins the inaugural Cheeziest Joke Of The Edinburgh Fringe prize
Milton wins £1,000 for his zippy one-liner about funeral cars

The first ever Cheeziest Joke Of The Edinburgh Fringe award has been won by comic Fil Milton, bagging him £1,000 in prize money. He was picked out of 130 entries and a public vote for his joke: ‘My brother convinced me to go halves on a used funeral car. I can’t believe I was so easily co-hearsed.’
His zinger was named the best in a public vote featuring five entries. Here’s the list in full:
- ‘When I got diagnosed with indecisiveness, I was in shock and/or…’ – Conk
- 'My brother convinced me to go halves on a used funeral car. I can't believe I was so easily co-hearsed.' Fil Milton
- 'I'm looking for a new job. I walked past a mirror shop the other day and thought, “Ooh, I could see myself working there.”' Bróccán Tyzack-Carlin
- 'Invisaligns are like the players of the teeth-straightening community – because they're low commitment and you can see right through them.' Ruby Carr
- ‘Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will probably start a podcast about fishing.’ Martin Bearne
He said of his win, ‘It’s a massive treat. As a relatively new comedian doing my first show at the Fringe, having this award really helps get the word out about me and my show. It’s really important to highlight individual jokes too – sometimes a little one-liner can get overlooked or dismissed as a dad joke, but they take a lot of effort. I’m really pleased Cheez-It have done it.’
Milton’s show, Fil Milton... Is a One-Liner Comedian, can be found at Pizza Geeks Easter Road as part of the Free Fringe from Saturday 22–Sunday 30 August.
The award was started by the cracker brand Cheez-It, which has been a common sight in Edinburgh throughout August since it became a major supporter of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year. It unofficially replaces the Funniest Joke Of The Fringe, which was presented by the television channel Dave until it pulled the plug on the contest in July 2025. Its final entry was Mark Simmons for his joke: ‘I was going to sail around the globe in the world’s smallest ship, but I bottled it.’
