Lennoxlove House
Lennoxlove House just outside Haddington features architecture dating back to the 15th century. This rich built history, added to by notable architects over time, is only surpassed by the collection of art and artefacts within its walls, including a silver jewellery box belonging to Mary, Queen Of Scots. The gardens also hold a variety of rare plant life, including a 600-year-old chestnut tree.
Holmwood House
For lovers of classical design, Holmwood House near Glasgow is a chocolate box of a grand home, filled with exquisite décor. Situated on a bend of the River Cart, it was designed in 1858 by architect and proponent of sustainable design, Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson, whose life is depicted in the house’s imagination gallery. Wander the gilded rooms, marvel at the cornicing of the dome and enjoy sculptures old and new, including fascinating work by Jonathan Owen.
Hill Of Tarvit Mansion
Over in Fife, Hill Of Tarvit may not be the largest of mansions, but it isn’t without a unique charm. Designed by Robert Lorimer, the arts and crafts interior not only showcases the life of its wealthy inhabitants (exhibiting furniture and art collected by jute mogul Frederick Bower Sharp), but also gives visitors a glimpse of life below stairs. For golfers, it’s also home to the only dedicated hickory golf course in the UK.
