Yuck Circus: Naughties review – High-flying fun
Femme-led circus, pop classics and jaw-dropping aerial stunts make for a raucous throwback
The Aussie femme-led circus troupe is back and, as always, it’s worth taking a moment to marvel at how they change the way women view their own bodies by doing, you know, totally normal things like forming a human pyramid. It never gets old. This new show is a homage to the noughties, with a soundtrack of boyband and club classics. MC Georgia Deguara keeps the laughs coming and handles the crowd perfectly but we’re all here for the jaw-drops and the first half doesn’t quite deliver the circus set-pieces we’re waiting for.
Things go up a gear with an Evanescence-soundtracked aerial silk routine that perfectly matches tricks with the show’s shtick, with the performer’s spectacular side fringe deserving its own Insta. From here, it’s high note after high note: Fergie (the good one), fortune tellers, ropes, hoops, pyramids and all the good stuff in a final half hour that’s all yum, no yuck.
