Gareth Mutch Means Well comedy review: Classic, good-hearted stand-up
The Scottish favourite evokes his trademark charm for a likeable series of jokes
For a fairly safe hour of classic observational stand-up delivered well, Gareth Mutch is your man. He’s got charm, presence and an easy manner that suits the comedy stage.
Some of the material plays into the overdone; marriage makes you boring, women organise, men are children etc etc. Where Mutch shines is in delivering personal anecdotes, unique and weird, rather than generalisations. Tales of waxing off both his eyebrows in high school, his first date with his wife and his dad’s relationship with Martin Lewis get the audience solidly on side for some good belly laughs.
By the end of the set, he’s woven a web of in-jokes around the class implications of GiffGaff and self-deprecating callbacks to dodgy Spanish accents. He creates an undeniable feeling of camaraderie and everyone leaves smiling... and maybe thinking about changing their phone provider.
